Sociology teaches us that social forces act on us, they do things to us, they can enable or constrain us based on the groups that we belong to.
Genderism. Racism. Sizism. Heterocentrism.
Through sociology we then realize that what we are told is inaccurate. This realization gives us consciousness. We realize that we were socially constructed by society, by culture. Once this realization is made, we can then choose not to be what we were made.
Genderist. Racist. Sizist. Heterocentrist.
By choosing to alter the way that we were made, we often alienate familiar groups. At this point we can actively and reflexively socially construct our own lives. Adapt, adopt, and experiment with new ideas, and, in doing so, we start to build our new selves
